A No-Cost Path to Becoming a DSP

  • Date: September 5, 2025

Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) are the backbone of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They help with daily routines, encourage independence, foster personal growth, and create opportunities for community involvement. DSPs make a difference in ways that are both immediate and lasting, and their work is essential.

Now, thanks to a $1.21 million grant, SUNY Orange is offering DSP microcredential programs designed to prepare students for this vital career. The grant covers tuition, books, and course materials, making it possible for eligible students to complete the training at no cost. In addition, participants can receive a $750 stipend for each level completed, providing added support while they learn.

The DSP programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on experience, ensuring that students graduate with both knowledge and practical skills. They prepare participants for nationally recognized DSP certifications and provide stackable credits that can be applied to future certificate or degree programs.

Choosing a career as a DSP means choosing meaningful work. Every day, DSPs have the chance to build connections, celebrate achievements, and make life better for the people they support. The role brings personal rewards, as well as stability and room for professional growth. DSPs often go on to leadership roles or further studies in human services, creating a clear path for advancement.

For anyone considering this field, SUNY Orange's grant-funded program removes many of the barriers to getting started. It is a unique opportunity to train for a role that is not only stable but deeply rewarding.

At Hudson Regional LTC Pharmacy, we know how important DSPs are to the communities we serve. That is why we are proud to highlight this opportunity and encourage those who are ready to take the next step to explore the program.'
