The Urgent Need for Vaccination: Protecting the Vulnerable in Our Communities
Across the U.S., measles cases are making an alarming comeback—378 confirmed cases in 17 states and climbing. Texas alone has reported over 300 cases since January 2025, with several hospitalizations and one tragic death of an unvaccinated child. For healthcare professionals, especially those working with long-term care populations, this is more than a statistic—it’s a call to action.
Many of the individuals we serve, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD), are especially vulnerable. Some may have compromised immune systems and cannot receive certain vaccines themselves. This is where the concept of community immunity becomes vital. When the majority of people are vaccinated, it helps protect those who can’t be.
The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine for children—one at 12–15 months and the second at 4–6 years. Adults unsure of their vaccination history should receive at least one dose, and two if they work in healthcare, attend college, or travel internationally.
Unfortunately, misinformation and skepticism have caused vaccination rates to decline, opening the door to preventable diseases. At Hudson Regional LTC Pharmacy, we stand firm in our commitment to share accurate, science-based information to protect the people in your care.
If you’re unsure about vaccination protocols, or how to address concerns from staff or families, our team is ready to help you navigate the conversation and access resources.
