Community Traditions Strengthen Long-Term Care Connections

  • Date: December 19, 2025

Community traditions play an important role in long-term care settings because they create shared experiences that go beyond daily routines. The Ugly Sweater Contest is one example of how a simple seasonal activity can bring people together and build a sense of connection across homes.

Earlier this year, homes were invited to submit their holiday sweaters, creating excitement, friendly competition, and plenty of conversation throughout the community. This year, we were proud to celebrate two standout homes. Colonial at New Hope Community earned its first-ever win, and Woodbourne continued its impressive run with a third consecutive victory. Both achievements reflect the enthusiasm, teamwork, and spirit that residents and staff bring to these shared traditions.

These moments matter because connection is a key part of well-being. Activities that encourage creativity, humor, and participation strengthen relationships between residents, staff, and families. They offer opportunities for engagement that feel natural and enjoyable, helping people feel seen and included beyond their daily care routines.

Traditions like this also create continuity from year to year. They give homes something to look forward to and help build a shared identity across the community. Celebrations like the Ugly Sweater Contest remind everyone that long-term care is not just about services, but about community, pride, and belonging.
