PONS Repository: A New Resource for Zone 5 I/DD Nursing Professionals
Hudson Regional LTC Pharmacy is pleased to introduce the Plan of Nursing Services (PONS) Repository, a centralized resource created to support nurses and care professionals working in the intellectual and developmental disabilities field.
Why the PONS Repository Was Created
Nurses new to the intellectual and developmental disabilities field often find PONS development challenging. Unlike medical-surgical nursing where protocols are relatively standardized, I/DD nursing requires individualized care planning that accounts for each person's unique combination of health needs, communication abilities, behavioral presentations, and support requirements.
Experienced I/DD nurses develop expertise over time, but access to examples, templates, and best practice guidance accelerates this learning curve. The PONS Repository was created to provide organized access to these valuable resources.
What the PONS Repository Includes
The repository provides comprehensive resources for I/DD nursing professionals:
PONS Examples and References: Sample Plans of Nursing Services demonstrating comprehensive care planning for various conditions common in the I/DD population, such as seizure disorders, diabetes, behavioral health needs, and complex medical conditions.
Training Materials and Educational Resources: Guidance on developing effective PONS documents, understanding regulatory requirements, and implementing person-centered nursing care.
Guidelines for Zone 5 Nurses and Care Providers: Region-specific information relevant to nurses working in Zone 5 of the New York State developmental disabilities service system.
Documentation Tools Used in I/DD Services: Templates, checklists, and resources that support consistent, compliant documentation of nursing care.
Leadership Behind the Initiative
The PONS Repository initiative is being led by Krystal Ross and Dawn Blades. Both now serve as leaders of the Zone 5 Nurses Association in New York.
Their work focuses on:
Strengthening Collaboration: Building stronger professional networks among I/DD nurses.
Providing Practical Resources: Ensuring nurses have access to tools that support daily practice.
Elevating Nursing Practice: Promoting excellence in I/DD nursing through education and resource sharing.
Supporting New Nurses: Helping nurses new to the I/DD field develop competence and confidence more quickly.
The Zone 5 Nurses Association
Zone 5 represents a specific geographic region within the New York State developmental disabilities service system. The Nurses Association brings together nursing professionals working in this zone to share knowledge, provide mutual support, and advance nursing practice in I/DD services.
Professional nursing associations specific to intellectual and developmental disabilities serve important functions:
Specialized Education: Providing continuing education focused on conditions and care approaches relevant to I/DD populations.
Peer Support: Creating communities where nurses can discuss challenges, share solutions, and learn from each other's experiences.
Advocacy: Speaking collectively about the needs of I/DD nurses and the individuals they serve.
Professional Recognition: Validating I/DD nursing as a specialized practice requiring unique knowledge and skills.
Benefits of Centralized I/DD Nursing Resources
By making PONS materials and other nursing resources easier to access, the repository helps ensure nurses have the information they need to support individuals effectively while maintaining strong documentation and clinical practices.
Specific benefits include:
Reduced Learning Curve: New I/DD nurses can reference examples rather than starting from scratch.
Improved Consistency: Standardized approaches to common situations while maintaining individualization.
Enhanced Compliance: Better understanding of regulatory requirements and how to meet them.
Time Savings: Access to templates and examples reduces time spent on documentation development.
Professional Development: Exposure to various approaches expands nurses' clinical thinking.
How to Access the PONS Repository
Zone 5 or New York I/DD nurses interested in accessing the repository should contact Hudson Regional LTC Pharmacy for information about access procedures.
The repository continues to expand as additional resources are developed and contributed by I/DD nursing professionals across the region.
Looking Forward: Expanding I/DD Nursing Resources
The PONS Repository represents an initial step toward building more comprehensive support systems for I/DD nursing professionals. Future plans include expanding the types of resources available, creating opportunities for nurses to contribute their expertise, and extending access to nurses in other New York regions.
By investing in resources that support nursing excellence, we strengthen the entire system of care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Better-supported nurses provide better care, and ultimately, individuals with I/DD benefit from the expertise and dedication of nursing professionals who have access to the resources they need.
